Following rival IBM's foray into the Linux market, Hewlett-Packard has selected the open source Unix cousin as one of its three primary operating systems. The move was spurred by consumer requests for an alternative to Unix or Microsoft Windows 2000 operating systems, a company official said. While HP's endorsement will give Linux a boost with infrastructure companies, the platform probably won't take off until customer demand filters down to application vendors, an analyst said. |
