IBM today unveiled a new console support controller for the S/390 which the company contends makes adding mainframe images easier and cheaper.
Currently, users have to add a separate IBM 3174 Establishment Controller to support the startup of each S/390 image. The new IBM 2074 Console Support Controller can support up to 32 different images and potentially save shops hundreds of thousands of dollars, the company said.
For example, a shop will only need one Netfinity-sized box to run up to 32 different operating systems. By contrast, each different image or added operating system needed a separate dorm-sized refrigerator 3174 product. The cost comparison is $45,000 for the new box versus $640,000 ($20,000 each for the 32 boxes).
"This new console support controller lets customers take advantage of one of the greatest strengths of the S/390 -- the ability to run multiple operating systems and images on a single machine -- in a much more cost effective manner," Peter McCaffrey, IBM's S/390 product manager said in a statement. "It's easier to use, cheaper to run and saves floor space. These are benefits that everyone -- from the IT staff to the accounting department -- can appreciate."
The 2074 controller also operates with a graphical user interfaces which expands the number of users beyond people trained on the green screen terminal of the old 3174.
Mike Kahn, an analyst with the Clipper Group of Wellesley, Mass., sees the ease of operation as the greatest benefit of the new console. "Being able to manage multiple machines from one location, that's good," he said noting this is especially beneficial to companies running more than one machine.
"There will also be a real estate savings since less space and equipment will be needed," Kahn said.
The new controller will be available on Sept. 29. Related link: IBM’s new console support controller
